Chapter 20

Echo

Alida laughs. “Oh, the people are going to love you.”

I just frown at her, “I don’t see how.” I get up, heading toward Marko, who has begun to pick at a not totally trashed plate of food.

He holds it up as I place Tade in his open lap. “But you have not eaten?” He calls as I walk toward the exit.

I pause, “You eat, and make sure he does too.” I wave them off, walking out. Ignoring the calls of my name. I just need a moment. One moment to wrap my head around everything that is going on.

Turning down a hall, I look around, trying to recall where I had heard sparing yesterday. I know there is a training room around here. I’m positive about it. A few wrong turns and a couple of blocked entrances finally have me finding the room. Entering, I close the door having a look around.

It seems normal enough. Not weird mechanical things or flashing lights. Nodding, I move to a punching bag. Taking a breath, I start to work out my frustrations. I need this. These few minutes to myself to release the tension, the fear, the worry, and all the other feelings I bottle up inside. My hits grow faster, harder. I feel pain race to my wrists, knowing that my unwrapped knuckles were beginning to split.

I just keep hitting, the pain helping to center my mind. Pain, I know. Pain is an old friend who has seen me through much. Pain makes you aware. Pain pushes you to fight, or at least it drives me. I hear the door behind me open, and two male voices enter. I do not know them, so uncaring I just keep going. The voices go quiet as they watch me. Then one clears his throat, speaking up.

“If you are trying to punch your troubles away, would a sparring partner not be better?”

“Most people—“I slam my fist again. “—don’t like being a punching bag.” I do a one-two reversal. “Besides, I have a bad habit of not knowing when to stop.” I pant, throwing another hard punch, only this one lands awkwardly from their distractions and the blood. “Damnit.” Shaking out my hand, I look. They are watching me hard.

I sigh, unsure of what they have planned but ready if it was going to go sideways. One steps toward me, his hand out. “Here, let me see your hand. You should really use gloves.”

I shrug, not giving over my hand.“Gloves get in the way of pain.” I mutter, stepping back toward the bag.

He smiles. “You sound like my brother. He likes the pain when training, says it centers him.”

I smirk. “Then he and I are alike, shocking,” There may have been a touch of sass on that, but I was actually shocked to hear anyone thought like me.

He nods, “You must be Echo.”

He takes a step back when I nod yes. I see them both step forward together, and as I’m about to face them for a fight, they bow.
